It is really necessary to redefine the priorities of energy policy in the coming years, since investment in the efficient use and better exploitation of renewable sources are crucial to be able to face the environmental crisis derived from climate change that we are experiencing throughout the planet and to be able to guarantee energy sovereignty.
Around 68% of global emissions are generated by 10 countries alone, including Mexico, which contributes 1.68% of the total. The main sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Mexico are electricity production and transmission activities, automobiles and public transportation, and livestock, with more than 60% of total emissions coming from the use of fossil fuels. Hence, the energy sector is one of the major contributors to climate change, facing a great challenge to ensure not only universal access to energy in an affordable and reliable way, but also sustainable, with the least impact on the environment.
